Necrotizing Soft Tissue Infections Treatment with Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy

Necrotizing soft tissue infections are life-threatening emergencies. HBOT is used alongside surgery and antibiotics to stop the spread of infection and help the body fight back.

Understanding Necrotizing Soft Tissue Infections

Necrotizing soft tissue infections (NSTIs) are severe, rapidly spreading infections that destroy skin, fat, and muscle tissue. They are sometimes referred to as "flesh-eating" infections. One well-known type is Fournier's gangrene, which affects the perineal area.

These infections can be caused by a variety of bacteria and often begin after a minor wound, surgical incision, or insect bite. They spread quickly through tissue and can become life-threatening within hours. Symptoms include intense pain (often out of proportion to the visible wound), rapid swelling, redness, fever, and tissue that feels hard or woody to the touch.

NSTIs require emergency treatment including surgical removal of dead tissue (debridement), intravenous antibiotics, and intensive medical care. HBOT is used as an adjunctive therapy alongside these primary treatments.

How Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy Helps

Many of the bacteria that cause necrotizing infections are anaerobic — meaning they thrive in environments without oxygen. HBOT creates an oxygen-rich environment that directly inhibits the growth and toxin production of these anaerobic organisms.

Additionally, HBOT enhances the killing capacity of white blood cells (which require oxygen to destroy bacteria effectively), improves the penetration and effectiveness of certain antibiotics, and reduces tissue swelling to help slow the spread of infection.

What to Expect During Treatment

For necrotizing infections, HBOT treatments are typically started as soon as the patient is stabilized. Sessions may be administered multiple times per day in the acute phase. Treatment continues alongside surgical debridement and antibiotic therapy until the infection is controlled.
