Severe Anemia Treatment with Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy
When blood transfusion is not possible, HBOT provides a lifeline by delivering oxygen directly through your blood plasma — bypassing the need for red blood cells.
Understanding Severe Anemia
Severe anemia is a condition where your body has dangerously low levels of red blood cells or hemoglobin — the protein that carries oxygen throughout your body. Without enough hemoglobin, your organs do not receive the oxygen they need to function.
In most cases, severe anemia is treated with a blood transfusion to restore red blood cell levels. However, transfusion is not always possible. Some patients cannot receive blood products due to medical conditions (such as autoimmune disorders or severe reactions to previous transfusions) or personal and religious beliefs. In these situations, an alternative method of oxygen delivery is needed to keep vital organs alive while the body produces new red blood cells.
How Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy Helps
Under normal conditions, nearly all the oxygen in your blood is carried by hemoglobin in red blood cells. HBOT works by dissolving oxygen directly into the blood plasma — the liquid portion of your blood — bypassing the need for hemoglobin entirely.
At hyperbaric pressures, the amount of dissolved oxygen in plasma increases dramatically, providing enough oxygen to sustain organ function even when red blood cell levels are critically low. This buys time for the body to produce new red blood cells naturally or for other medical interventions to take effect.
What to Expect During Treatment
HBOT for severe anemia is an urgent treatment. Sessions are administered as frequently as needed based on your hemoglobin levels and clinical status. Each session lasts approximately 90 minutes, and treatment continues until your body has produced enough red blood cells to sustain adequate oxygen delivery on its own.
