Arterial Ulcers Treatment

Arterial ulcers develop when poor blood flow to the legs or feet prevents wounds from receiving the oxygen and nutrients they need to heal. Our wound care team provides personalized treatment to promote healing and protect your limb.

Understanding Arterial Ulcers

Arterial ulcers are open wounds that develop on the legs, feet, or toes due to poor arterial blood circulation. When arteries become narrowed or blocked (a condition called peripheral arterial disease or PAD), the tissue downstream does not receive enough blood to stay healthy.

These ulcers are typically found on the toes, feet, or lower legs. They tend to have a "punched-out" appearance with well-defined edges and may be painful. Unlike venous ulcers, which are often associated with swelling, arterial ulcers are often accompanied by cool skin, absent pulses, and pale or shiny skin on the affected leg.

How We Treat Arterial Ulcers

Our wound care specialists take a comprehensive approach to arterial ulcers. Treatment begins with a thorough vascular assessment to understand the extent of blood flow compromise. We coordinate with vascular surgeons when revascularization procedures may be needed to restore blood flow.

Direct wound management includes careful debridement of dead tissue, application of advanced dressings selected for the specific wound environment, infection prevention and management, and offloading strategies to protect the wound from further injury. When clinically appropriate, HBOT may be integrated into the treatment plan to enhance tissue oxygenation.
