HBOT Indicated UHMS Recognized

Central Retinal Artery Occlusion Treatment with Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy

Central retinal artery occlusion causes sudden, painless vision loss. When caught early, HBOT may help preserve sight by delivering oxygen to the retina while the blockage is addressed.

Understanding Central Retinal Artery Occlusion

Central retinal artery occlusion (CRAO) is a sudden blockage of the main artery that supplies blood to the retina — the light-sensitive tissue at the back of your eye. It is sometimes described as a "stroke of the eye."

CRAO typically causes sudden, painless loss of vision in one eye. The retina is extremely sensitive to oxygen deprivation, and irreversible damage can begin within 60 to 90 minutes of the blockage. This makes CRAO a medical emergency where every minute counts.

How Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy Helps

HBOT provides emergency oxygenation to the retina by dramatically increasing the oxygen dissolved in blood plasma. Because the retina can absorb oxygen from the choroidal blood supply (which is not affected by the arterial occlusion), HBOT can deliver oxygen to the retina even while the central retinal artery remains blocked.

This oxygenation supports retinal cell survival while the body works to dissolve or bypass the blockage, potentially preserving some degree of vision. The UHMS recognizes CRAO as an indication for HBOT based on clinical evidence. Time is critical — the best outcomes are associated with treatment initiated within hours of symptom onset.

What to Expect During Treatment

HBOT for CRAO is an emergency treatment. The first session is administered as soon as possible after diagnosis. Multiple closely spaced sessions may be recommended in the first 24 to 72 hours. Your ophthalmologist works closely with our hyperbaric team throughout the process.

Insurance & Coverage

This indication is recognized by the Undersea and Hyperbaric Medical Society (UHMS) and supported by peer-reviewed clinical evidence. It is not currently covered by Medicare under NCD 20.29. Coverage may be available through select commercial insurance plans. Our team will help verify your specific coverage and discuss all available options.
