Understanding Selected Problem Wounds
Selected problem wounds are chronic wounds that have failed to respond to standard wound care therapies after an appropriate treatment period. These may include pressure ulcers, venous stasis ulcers, arterial insufficiency ulcers, and other complex wounds where healing has stalled.
Chronic wounds often share a common underlying problem: the tissue around the wound does not receive enough oxygen to support the healing process. Without adequate oxygen, your body cannot build new blood vessels, fight infection, or produce the collagen needed to close the wound.
How Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy Helps
HBOT delivers oxygen directly to the hypoxic (oxygen-starved) tissue surrounding the wound. This increased oxygen availability stimulates multiple healing pathways: new blood vessel formation, enhanced immune cell function, increased collagen production, and improved cellular metabolism.
The UHMS recognizes HBOT as an appropriate adjunctive therapy for problem wounds that have demonstrated a measurable oxygen deficit and have not responded to standard care. HBOT is used alongside continued wound management, not as a replacement for it.
What to Expect During Treatment
Treatment for problem wounds typically involves 20 to 40 sessions, each lasting approximately 90 minutes. Your progress is monitored throughout the course, and our team coordinates with your wound care specialist or referring physician.
HBOT is used as part of a comprehensive wound care plan that may include advanced dressings, debridement, offloading, infection management, and vascular optimization.
