HBOT Indicated UHMS Recognized

Intracranial Abscess Treatment with Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy

An intracranial abscess is a serious brain infection that requires aggressive treatment. HBOT enhances antibiotic effectiveness and supports the immune response deep within the brain.

Understanding Intracranial Abscess

An intracranial abscess is a collection of pus within the brain or the membranes surrounding the brain, caused by a bacterial or fungal infection. These infections can develop from sinus or ear infections, dental infections, surgery, trauma, or bloodborne sources.

Intracranial abscesses are serious and potentially life-threatening. They can cause headaches, fever, neurological deficits, seizures, and increased pressure within the skull. Treatment typically involves a combination of surgery (to drain the abscess when possible), long-term intravenous antibiotics, and close neurological monitoring.

How Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy Helps

HBOT supports the treatment of intracranial abscesses by increasing oxygen levels within the brain. The elevated oxygen enhances the killing capacity of white blood cells, which require oxygen to produce the reactive molecules used to destroy bacteria.

HBOT also improves the penetration and effectiveness of certain antibiotics in the brain tissue and may help reduce the swelling associated with the abscess. The UHMS recognizes intracranial abscess as an appropriate indication for adjunctive HBOT when used alongside standard surgical and antibiotic management.

What to Expect During Treatment

Treatment is coordinated between our hyperbaric physician, your neurosurgeon, and your infectious disease specialist. Sessions last approximately 90 minutes, and the number of treatments depends on the size and response of the abscess. HBOT is used as an adjunct to — not a replacement for — surgery and antibiotics.
