Pressure Injuries Treatment
Pressure injuries — commonly called bed sores — can develop quickly and take months to heal. Our wound care specialists provide the expert, personalized treatment needed to close these wounds and prevent recurrence.
Understanding Pressure Injuries
Pressure injuries (also known as pressure ulcers, bedsores, or decubitus ulcers) develop when sustained pressure on the skin reduces blood flow to the tissue underneath. They most commonly occur over bony prominences — the tailbone (sacrum), hips, heels, and elbows — in people who are bedridden, use a wheelchair, or have limited mobility.
Pressure injuries range from Stage 1 (intact skin with non-blanchable redness) to Stage 4 (full-thickness tissue loss with exposed bone, tendon, or muscle). They can develop in as little as a few hours of unrelieved pressure and can be complicated by infection, undermining, and tunneling.
How We Treat Pressure Injuries
Our wound care team uses a comprehensive approach to pressure injury management. Treatment addresses both the wound itself and the underlying factors that caused it. Key components include pressure redistribution (offloading) using specialized surfaces and positioning schedules, wound bed preparation through careful debridement, moisture-balanced dressings selected for the wound stage, and nutritional optimization to support healing.
For more advanced pressure injuries, we may incorporate negative pressure wound therapy, skin substitute grafts, or other advanced modalities. We work closely with your primary care provider, rehabilitation team, and caregivers to develop a sustainable prevention plan.
