Venous Stasis Ulcers Treatment

Venous stasis ulcers are the most common type of leg ulcer. With expert wound care and proper compression therapy, these chronic wounds can heal — even if they have been open for months.

Understanding Venous Stasis Ulcers

Venous stasis ulcers develop when the veins in your legs cannot efficiently return blood to your heart. Normally, one-way valves in your leg veins keep blood flowing upward. When these valves become damaged or weakened (venous insufficiency), blood pools in the lower legs, increasing pressure and causing fluid to leak into surrounding tissue.

Over time, this increased pressure and fluid buildup damage the skin, making it fragile and prone to breakdown. Venous ulcers typically appear on the inner lower leg, above the ankle. They are often shallow, irregularly shaped, and surrounded by discolored, thickened skin. Swelling, heaviness, and aching in the affected leg are common.

How We Treat Venous Stasis Ulcers

The cornerstone of venous ulcer treatment is compression therapy — applying controlled pressure to the leg to counteract the venous hypertension that causes the ulcer. Our specialists select the appropriate compression system for your specific needs.

In addition to compression, our wound care approach includes advanced wound dressings tailored to your wound's moisture level and healing stage, debridement to remove dead tissue and promote a healthy wound bed, infection surveillance and management, skin care for the surrounding tissue, and patient education on leg elevation, activity, and self-care.

What to Expect During Treatment

Your treatment begins with a comprehensive assessment including evaluation of your venous circulation. Our team creates a personalized care plan and teaches you how to manage compression and skin care between visits. Regular follow-up appointments allow us to track your progress and adjust your treatment plan as your wound heals.
